Russia’s 9-Seat VIP An-74D Turns Heads at RUBAE 2026

Uktus Airlines brought an unlikely VIP machine to RUBAE 2026: the rugged An-74D, transformed from a cargo aircraft into a nine-seat executive aircraft. Built for demanding airfields rather than luxury travel, the unusual An-74D reveals a very different side of Russian business aviation.

One of the most interesting aircraft at the 2026 Russian Business Aviation Exhibition RUBAE 2026 was an Antonov An-74D operated by JSC Uktus Airlines. It’s hardly the usual business aviation show, dominated by elegant corporate jets, but Uktus showed a totally different type of aircraft, a rugged twin-engine plane turned into a nine-passenger VIP machine.

The aircraft represents a unique approach to executive aviation. The An-74D is not a business jet created as such but a derivative of an aircraft family developed for regional transport, cargo operations, and flights from challenging airfields. Its debut at RUBAE proved how this unconventional platform may be adapted for specialized passenger operations.

From utility aircraft to VIP transport aircraft

The An-74D is an administrative and business aircraft derivative of the An-74 family, built from the An-72/An-74 series of transport aircraft. The basic airframe was developed for demanding working circumstances, while the D version offered a more comfortable passenger environment, intended for executive and administrative travel.

The airplane shown by Uktus at RUBAE 2026 was equipped to carry nine passengers in its VIP cabin. This is an unusually modest passenger complement for a plane of the An-74’s size, but that’s just what gives the aircraft its distinctive character.

The layout instead maximizes the potential of the aircraft as a dedicated executive transport rather than simply trying to carry as many passengers as possible. The concept is to offer a specialized aircraft for a small party, which could be advantageous in instances when a regular business jet would not be the most feasible option.

The An-74’s Unusual Design

The most readily recognizable aspect of the An-74 is the layout of its engine. Two turbofan engines are positioned on pylons near to the fuselage above the wings. This strange arrangement makes the An-72/An-74 family unique.

The layout was intended to improve the performance of the aircraft when operating from relatively short, bumpy or poorly prepared runways. The engines were mounted high above the ground to decrease the risk of foreign-object ingestion and to enable the aircraft to benefit from its powerful high-lift aerodynamic features.

For a VIP aircraft, these characteristics provide a capability rarely associated with traditional business jets.

A typical business aircraft usually operates from established airports with paved runways and extensive ground facilities. The An-74D, in contrast, still has a lot of the DNA of a rugged transport aircraft. Its potential benefit is therefore not only passenger comfort but the capacity to deliver executive transport to areas less accessible to regular business aircraft.

Uktus and Its An-74 Fleet

The appearance of the An-74D at RUBAE also highlights the specialised nature of Uktus Airlines’ fleet.

The company flies a number of An-74 family aircraft in different configurations for various duties. Uktus has flown variations of the An-74 in addition to the VIP aircraft for medevac and cargo missions.

This creates an interesting fleet structure in which essentially the same basic aircraft family can perform three very different roles. One plane can transport executives, another can be used for medical missions, and another can deliver freight.

The approach reflects the inherent flexibility of the An-74 platform. Its cabin and equipment can be changed to different needs without sacrificing the transport-aircraft features.

An Aircraft With a Long History

The aircraft displayed at RUBAE also has a long operational history. The airframe is from the late 1990’s and has spent much of its life in specialized aviation activities.

Its earlier career comprised cargo operations before the aircraft was modified to a VIP configuration. The modification indicates that an airframe designed for utilitarian operations can be converted to a totally different function later in its service life.

Converted aircraft can have a second life, rather than becoming outdated when their initial mission changes. This can be an intriguing proposal for operators requiring specialized aircraft but who do not wish to introduce a completely new platform.

Why Bring an An-74D to a Business Aviation Exhibition?

The decision to exhibit the aircraft at RUBAE was particularly meaningful because the event brought togther some of the most recognizable ideas in the business aviation industry.

Modern business jets often compete on speed, range, cabin comfort, avionics, and efficiency. The An-74D competes according to a different philosophy.

The appeal is that it provides a VIP interior in the shell of a tough regional transport aircraft. But the An-74 family can carry nine passengers in an environment tailored to corporate travel while keeping the features that make it valuable for operations outside the normal business aviation network.

That gives the aircraft a highly specialised niche.

For corporate groups, government delegations, industrial organizations and other customers traveling to remote regions, the ability to combine executive accommodation with an aircraft designed for demanding airfield conditions can be more important than the extreme range or speed offered by a modern long-range business jet.

The An-74D therefore represents a fundamentally different interpretation of business aviation.

The Uktus An-74D was therefore one of the most unusual aircraft at RUBAE 2026. Its presence proved that business aviation is not limited to aircraft developed expressly as corporate jets.

The appearance of the An-74D is further evidence of the lifespan of the An-74 family. A specialized configuration and new operational responsibilities can help an airplane designed decades ago for tough transport operations still find relevance.

This transition was successfully demonstrated by Uktus at RUBAE 2026. It may not be as stylish as a new corporate jet, but its mix of a nine-passenger VIP cabin, tough airfield capability, and a highly adjustable airframe provides it a unique niche in Russian commercial aviation.
