S7’s Homegrown Aircraft Takes Flight in Major Aviation Milestone

Russia has achieved another milestone in its aviation import-substitution program as the S7 Tango trainer aircraft completed its first flight with the indigenous APD-520 "Leader" piston engine. The successful sortie launches flight certification and brings the all-Russian aircraft a step closer to serial production in 2027.

The Tango light aircraft, which was developed by Spectra Aircraft, a member of the S7 Group, successfully concluded its first flight, marking another major milestone in Russia’s efforts to localize its civil aviation industry. The aircraft was powered by the domestically developed APD-520 “Leader” piston engine. The flight signifies the start of the aircraft’s flight certification campaign in its new configuration. Tango is a completely indigenous training aircraft for Russia’s civilian aviation sector.

Vladimir Barsuk, Director of the Siberian Aeronautical Research Institute (SibNIA) named after S.A. Chaplygin, conducted the maiden flight. Barsuk is a Class 1 test pilot. The aircraft successfully completed a standard flight circuit before landing safely at its departure airfield, as per S7 Group. All onboard systems operated as expected throughout the mission.

A Successful Initial Flight

The inaugural flight, despite its brief duration, was the result of months of rigorous testing and engineering work. The primary objective was to evaluate the aircraft’s handling characteristics, stability, and overall systems integration while validating the performance of the newly installed APD-520 engine under actual flight conditions..

The company reported that the flight successfully achieved its intended objectives. Engineers were able to proceed with the subsequent phases of the certification program with confidence, as no abnormalities were observed during takeoff, flight, or landing.

The APD-520’s replacement of the imported engine that powered earlier prototypes is particularly significant, as it brings the Tango project closer to complete domestic production and reduces dependence on foreign aerospace components.

Extensive Ground Testing Before Flight

The Tango underwent a comprehensive series of ground tests to verify the operation of every key onboard system prior to receiving clearance for its maiden flight with the new engine.

The fuel system, flight controls, braking system, avionics, and electromagnetic compatibility between onboard equipment were meticulously assessed by engineers. Specialists monitored engine response, power output, operating temperatures, and reliability under varying conditions as the APD-520 engine was tested across its entire operating range.

After the aircraft successfully concluded engine testing, it underwent increasingly difficult taxi trials. These consisted of a series of short hops that reached an altitude of approximately five meters, high-speed runs that approached takeoff velocity, and low-speed taxiing. These tests enabled engineers to ascertain the aircraft’s lift-off speed and assess its controllability during the critical transition from ground roll to flight.

The Tango was cleared for its first full flight only after successfully completing each stage of this validation process.

The Development of the Tango Program

The Tango aircraft’s development began in the spring of 2023 at S7’s engineering facility in Torbeyevo near Moscow.

The aircraft’s inaugural flight occurred in September 2024 as a technology demonstrator. The aerodynamic characteristics and overall flight performance of the airframe were validated by engineers using an imported Belgian UL Power UL520is piston engine in the early prototype prior to the integration of a domestically developed powerplant.

Development proceeded gradually throughout 2025

In December 2025, Spectra Aircraft, in collaboration with SibNIA specialists, performed a flight test of an upgraded version of the Tango that improved its takeoff and landing performance, aerodynamic efficiency, and weight distribution. Bench testing of the APD-520 “Leader” engine was successfully concluded at the company’s technical center in Torbeyevo at approximately the same time. The engine’s installation on the aircraft was facilitated by the confirmation that it met all anticipated performance objectives during the tests.

Certification Campaign Begins

In February 2026, the Russian Aviation Register successfully completed the “Mock-Up” certification stage for the Tango, which is equipped with the APD-520 engine.

Certification specialists conducted a preliminary assessment of the aircraft’s compliance with Russian airworthiness requirements, evaluated the planned scope of certification activities, examined installed systems and components, and reviewed the aircraft’s certification requirements during this phase.

The start of flight certification testing was officially authorized upon the end of the evaluation, which was conducted subsequent to the successful maiden flight. The forthcoming test campaign will involve the gradual expansion of the aircraft’s flight envelope, as well as the validation of engine performance, reliability, safety, and compliance with certification standards, prior to the commencement of serial production.

The APD-520 “Leader”

The APD-520 “Leader” is a Russian piston aircraft engine that has been recently developed by Spectra Aircraft. This engine is part of the broader strategy of the S7 Group to establish a domestic aerospace manufacturing capability.

The six-cylinder engine is appropriate for private aviation applications and light training aircraft, as it generates approximately 200 horsepower. It is designed to replace imported piston engines that were previously used in comparable aircraft, thereby bolstering Russia’s efforts to localize aviation manufacturing and decrease its dependence on foreign suppliers.

The APD-520 offers engineers valuable operational data during the certification campaign, in addition to replacing a foreign engine. The data collected during flight testing will be used to improve engine performance, enhance reliability, and refine the supporting aircraft systems prior to the aircraft’s entry into commercial production.

Designed for Training and Private Aviation

The Tango is a four-seat, all-composite aircraft that is primarily intended for the initial training of civilian pilots. In comparison to conventional metal aircraft, its lightweight composite structure provides many benefits, such as improved corrosion resistance, reduced maintenance requirements, and lower operating costs.

The aircraft is designed to provide private owners, flying clubs, and regional operators with an efficient option for personal transportation and recreational flight, in addition to pilot training.

The current design specifications suggest that the aircraft will have a maximum range of approximately 1,375 kilometers, a cruise speed of approximately 219 kilometers per hour, and an operational ceiling of 4,000 meters. These attributes render the aircraft appropriate for a diverse array of general aviation missions, including cross-country travel and flight instruction.

Supporting Russia’s Aviation Industry

The Tango project exemplifies S7 Group’s aspiration to transcend airline operations and establish itself as a comprehensive aerospace manufacturer. Russia’s domestic aviation industry has been fortified by the company’s investment in aircraft design, engine development, engineering, certification, and manufacturing capabilities through Spectra Aircraft.

The APD-520 engine’s successful inaugural flight serves as tangible evidence of the technical progress achieved in developing a training aircraft that is entirely Russian-designed and powered by Russian technology. Although there is still substantial certification work to be completed, the program has now entered one of its most critical aspects. Serial production is anticipated to commence in 2027.
