A 27-year-old woman, working as a Human Resources (HR) professional committed suicide on 7 May 2021. The suicide was allegedly the result of a marital dispute which ensued over a selfie. The victim killed herself by laying down on the railway tracks in the path of an oncoming train at the Vikhroli Railway Station. The deceased’s father lodged a police complaint against his son-in-law and his parents. Charges of ‘abetment and cruelty’ have been pressed against the all the accused.
According to the complaint, the husband who worked as a driver, was physically abusive and would regularly assault the complainant’s daughter (victim) in a fit of alcoholic rage. The police complaint also documents taunts by the deceased’s in-laws over not bearing a child. On 5 May 2021, the victim’s husband had called his father-in-law (the complainant) to show him a selfie which his daughter (the deceased) had clicked. The selfie in question was a picture of the deceased and her friends.
This picture led to a heated argument which eventually had to be resolved at the Vikhroli Police Station. A lady officer at the police station had reportedly mediated and counselled the couple. On 7 May 2021, the victim left her maternal home where she was staying since the fight (two days earlier) and told her parents that she was heading to work. The victim then went to Vikhroli Railway Station where she committed suicide in front of an oncoming train. She had sent final text messages to her father and brother before taking the step to kill herself. Vikhroli police have not yet commented on the case.
