Close Call: US RQ-4B Global Hawk Drone Flirts with Russian Airspace, Sparks Su-27 Reaction

A US reconnaissance drone, Global Hawk, came dangerously close to crossing Russian territory when flying over the Black Sea. According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, a Su-27 fighter jet was launched to bring down the enemy aircraft. They explained that their radar systems had identified an aerial target flying over the Black Sea and approaching the Russian border.

A Su-27 fighter plane was dispatched into the air from one of the standby units of the Russian Federation’s air defence forces to locate the aerial target and thwart an unauthorised entry across the state border of the Russian Federation, said the release, adding that the Russian fighter crew recognised the airborne target as being the reconnaissance UAV RQ-4B Global Hawk of the United States Air Force.

As the Russian aircraft got closer, the drone made a sharp turn away from the international boundary. The Su-27 safely returned to its home base, preventing any breach of Russian airspace. According to the Ministry of Defence, the flight of the Russian fighter was carried out in complete observance of the international regulations governing the use of airspace above neutral waters, as well as the preventive measures in place.
