First KasperskyOS Device is Being Tested, Camera-less and Pre-Installed with Telegram

Customers are currently testing the first full-fledged smartphone with the proprietary KasperskyOS. The device, based on an Aquarius-developed shell, currently lacks cameras but features a pre-installed Telegram messenger and an NFC chip, according to Kaspersky Lab’s Managing Director. Despite the lack of specific release dates, it appears that a significant amount of work remains ahead.

According to Eugene Kaspersky, one of the founders of Kaspersky Lab, work on the secure operating system began around 2005–2006, with the idea surfacing much earlier. However, it wasn’t until 2022–2023 that the situation began to gain momentum. At that time, the CEO revealed some details about the upcoming system, now called KasperskyOS.

It appears to be a custom-developed microkernel-based operating system. It is primarily intended for use in critical infrastructure, meaning its design will differ significantly from typical alternatives. For example, its app store will have a unique set of available programs, and developers will have access to two ecosystems. However, KasperskyOS is not intended to be used as a primary OS for smartphones or computers.

Interestingly, Kaspersky Lab does not plan to manufacture full smartphones like Apple. Instead, they will distribute the OS to other companies, which may include Russian and Asian device manufacturers that meet specific requirements. This is evident in the current situation, where Aquarius is solely responsible for the technical aspects of the new gadget.

In April 2024, Aquarius and Kaspersky Lab first introduced the device during the Systeme Electric Innovation Summit in Moscow. Unfortunately, no images or detailed information about the design, specifications, or price of the upcoming smartphone have leaked online — only interface screenshots. It was also mentioned that Eugene Kaspersky held the device in his hands during his presentation.

Speculation suggests that the Aquarius-developed device may resemble the previously introduced smartphones. For instance, Aquarius showcased an Aquarius smartphone with the Aurora operating system at the CIPR 2024 conference.
