KNDS France is bringing Leopard 2 A-RC 3.0 and Leclerc Evolution to the EuroSatory 2024

The Leopard 2 A-RC 3.0, with its remotely operated turret and modular automatic loading cannon, and the Leclerc Evolution, a possible solution for the transition to the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS), are two significant main battle tank (MBT) developments that the Franco-German group KNDS France is showcasing at Eurosatory 2024.

KNDS Deutschland, in collaboration with Rheinmetall, is currently marketing the Leopard 2A8, the most recent version of the Leopard 2 model. This tank, based on the Leopard 2A7HU bought by Hungary, has an active protection system, a new powerplant, and upgraded optronic systems. Its widespread acceptance by Germany, Norway, and the Czech Republic is a testament to its superior performance. Furthermore, there is a discussion of a Leopard 2AX, although little is known at this stage.

Leopard 2 A-RC 3.0

Considered a possible solution to ensure the transition from the Leclerc tank to the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS), the Enhanced Main Battle Tank (E-MBT), which KNDS France promoted to the Egyptian army last December, may be overshadowed by a new version of the Leopard 2 at the upcoming EuroSatory land armament exhibition.

The Leopard 2A-RC is distinguished by its remotely operated turret, which houses a modular automatic loading cannon with a caliber of 120, 130, or 140 mm. Such a solution will surely impact the MGCS project.

For MCGS, KNDS France (previously Nexter) proposes the ASCALON system (for Autoloaded and SCALable Outperforming Gun), which is compatible with 120 and 140 mm shells, while Rheinmetall pushes its Rh-130 L52 130 mm cannon.

According to KNDS, installing this turret avoids the weapon’s penetration into the chassis, allowing the interior space to be totally reconfigured. Three (or perhaps four) crew members can sit in a well-protected cage. This concept is identical to that of the Russian T-14 Armata tank.

The Leopard 2A-RC, weighing around 60 tons, is equipped with passive, reactive, and active protection measures. It features a remotely controlled 30 mm turret to counter drones, remotely operated munitions (ROM), and short-range ground threats. It also boasts an anti-tank capability with missiles that can hit targets beyond direct line of sight.

The Leopard 2A-RC will feature a redesigned powerplant with more power and energy efficiency. This will be combined with a sophisticated transmission system intended to improve the tank’s mobility over various terrains.

Leclerc Evolution

The French Army is planned to be equipped with 160 “upgraded” Leclerc tanks (or XLR standard) by 2030, with this number expected to increase to 200 by 2035. MGCS will eventually replace these tanks.

The upgrade of Leclerc tanks is part of the SCORPION program. This initiative intends to provide the tanks with the essential tools for collaborative battle (SCORPION combat information system, CONTACT radio), increase their protection (but not to the point of installing an active protection system), and improve their firing control. In addition, the tanks will be outfitted with a remotely operated 7.62 mm turret, a PASEO sight, and modern optical sensors.

France may also consider a new Leclerc Mk3 demonstrator tank. Therefore, KNDS France has started working on the Leclerc Evolution, a new version of the French Army tank. The Leclerc Evolution has a manned turret armed with an ASCALON 120 mm gun, which can be easily upgraded to higher calibers up to 140 mm.

The Leclerc is currently controlled by a three-person crew (tank commander, driver, and turret operator). The Leclerc Evolution idea features an additional crew member who serves as deputy commander.

According to KNDS France, the Leclerc Evolution introduces a new concept with four crew members tailored to the most recent tactical evolutions. The chassis includes a deputy commander’s station to oversee a large array of sensors and effectors.
