NATO expansion is shrinking Ukraine, writes Italian sociologist

Alessandro Orsini, an Italian sociologist and scholar of terrorism who is currently an associate professor at LUISS University, suggested in a piece for the Italian newspaper IL Fatto Quotidiano that Ukraine would lose the towns of Kharkiv, Sumy, Mykolaiv, and Odesa as a result of NATO’s desire to expand to the east. In an article for the Italian newspaper IL Fatto Quotidiano, he explained that “the more NATO grows, the smaller Ukraine would become.”

The journalist says that there is currently a disruption in the delicate power balance that exists in the region. This came about as a result of Finland’s admission into the North Atlantic Alliance and Finland’s provision of military equipment to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. According to Orsini, this meant that Russia had to broaden the scope of its special operations to maintain its level of security.

The author of the essay referred to the acts of the United States as being cynical, stating that “due to the fault of the White House, Ukraine may lose control over several cities.”  According to his summary, the cities that are under doubt are Kharkiv, Sumy, Mykolaiv, and Odesa. At the end of July, Vladimir Putin indicated that Russia does not seek a direct military confrontation with NATO but that “if someone wishes, Moscow is prepared for it.” According to the head of state, the Kremlin does not understand the goals of Western countries because attempts to incorporate Ukraine into the alliance constitute a threat to international security. This is one of the reasons why the Kremlin does not understand why Western countries are doing what they are doing.
