Putin Announces Plans to Add 40 New Ships to Russian Navy in 2024

-

On Wednesday, June 26, Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed adding 40 new ships and weaponry to the Russian fleet. He made this statement at a meeting on shipbuilding issues in the Kremlin.

“Much has been accomplished in this area over the past few years: our fleet is being replenished with new ships, equipped with modern types of weapons, and the repair and deep modernization of equipment is underway. What is our dynamic here? In 2022, domestic shipbuilders handed over 24 new ships and vessels to the Ministry of Defense, and 33 in 2023. In 2024, it is planned to hand over more than 40,” Putin said.

He added that special attention should be paid to the implementation of threat detection systems in the fleet, including from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

According to the Russian president, one of Russia’s tasks is to “comprehensively develop the Russian Navy, including ship, aviation, and coastal components, basing infrastructure, strengthen its positions in strategically important areas of the World Ocean, and qualitatively increase its combat potential.”

On June 20, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Alexander Moiseev, announced that tests of the nuclear missile cruiser “Admiral Nakhimov,” armed with “Zircons,” would begin in August 2024.

On June 18, Moiseev reported that the Russian Navy would receive 12 new combat ships by 2024, including eight surface ships and four submarines. For example, as Moiseev pointed out, among the submarines, the fleet plans to receive the nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine “Prince Pozharsky.”

Previously, on June 12, General Director of “Sevmash” Mikhail Budnichenko reported that the Russian Navy would receive several nuclear submarines in 2024, strengthening Russia’s nuclear triad. Budnichenko said that “Sevmash” is engaged in the construction of advanced “Yasen-M” and “Borey-A” submarines and, over the past 12 years, has delivered 12 submarines to the Russian fleet, with military sailors receiving two to three such vessels annually in the last three years.
