Sergey Sukhar, an Honored Test Pilot of Russia, has operated aircraft for more than thirty years, in which errors are quantified in lives rather than seconds. His professional experience encompasses a wide range of aircraft, including military transports and contemporary regional airliners, as well as continents and extreme climates. Sukhar is a member of a unique fraternity of pilots who are tasked with demonstrating their readiness for the rest of the world, in addition to flying aircraft. He has already completed over one hundred landings in Antarctica alone.
That experience has now resulted in the certification of the Il-114-300, a modernized regional turboprop aircraft that is intended to connect remote regions throughout the world’s largest country. This milestone is one of Russia’s most significant in recent years in the civil aviation sector. Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency granted the Il-114-300 its type certificate in June 2026, thereby authorizing it for commercial passenger service and serial production. The certification represents the culmination of a rigorous, multi-year flight test campaign that encompassed hundreds of test flights and a comprehensive evaluation under a diverse array of operational conditions.
A Career Built on Testing the Impossible
Before joining Ilyushin, Sergey Sukhar was employed by the Military Transport Aviation of Russia and, subsequently, at the esteemed V.P. Chkalov State Flight Test Center. His professional philosophy is indicative of the discipline that has been instilled in him throughout his career.
“We were taught that takeoff is dangerous, flight is beautiful, and landing is difficult,” Sukhar recalls.
Those words became particularly significant during his numerous expeditions to Antarctica, where the minimal infrastructure, ice-covered runways, and unpredictable weather leave no room for error. He is one of the most experienced pilots in extreme-environment aviation in Russia, having completed over one hundred successful Antarctic landings.
With this expertise, he was an ideal candidate to oversee critical components of the Il-114-300 flight test campaign.
Reviving the Il-114-300
When Russia resumed flight testing of the Il-114-300 two years before certification, Sukhar commanded the maiden flight of the second prototype aircraft. In retrospect, he considers the receipt of the type certificate to be one of the most significant moments of his professional life.
According to Sukhar, the certification represents the culmination of nearly two years of continuous testing, with crews flying almost every day under demanding conditions.
For long time period, the aircraft has been considered a critical element of Russia’s regional aviation strategy. The Il-114-300 is intended to operate from airports where modern jetliners are often impractical, and it is intended to replace aging Soviet-era turboprops on short and medium regional routes.
Certification, however, does not mark the end of development.
The aircraft’s operational envelope is being further expanded by engineers and test crews. Upcoming trials include high-temperature operations, flights from unpaved runways, high-altitude airports, and further optimization of takeoff and landing performance. The goal is to decrease the distance of both the takeoff roll and the landing, thereby enabling the aircraft to service even shorter airstrips in remote regions.
A First Flight Without Surprises
The first flight of any prototype is typically characterized by uncertainty; however, Sukhar asserts that the Il-114-300 was remarkably predictable.
Engineers conducted exhaustive engine runs and high-speed taxi tests prior to takeoff, which instilled confidence in all systems among the crew.
The outcome exceeded expectations.
Color-coded indicators are used to monitor the health of modern aircraft systems. Normal operation is denoted by green, while pilots are cautioned to monitor developing situations by yellow. Critical conditions necessitate immediate action by red.
Sukhar observes that none of the aircraft’s monitored parameters even approached the yellow zone during the Il-114-300’s maiden flight.
This stability during the initial flight was a significant accomplishment for a completely redesigned aircraft that had been equipped with new domestic avionics, digital flight systems, and updated engine.
Built for the Arctic
One of the main goals of the certification campaign was to demonstrate that the aircraft could operate in the extensive northern regions of Russia.
The Il-114-300 is equipped with a modern Russian-designed digital navigation suite that is capable of sustaining precise positioning even in the event of unreliable satellite signals. This capability is particularly valuable in high-latitude regions, where satellite geometry can complicate navigation.
Test crews conducted missions from Arctic island airfields on Novaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land, operating in close proximity to the North Pole, in order to verify these systems.
The campaign effectively confirmed the aircraft’s “all-latitude” capability by demonstrating its ability to operate across Arctic regions.
From Minus 45 Degrees to India’s Summer Heat
Extreme cold was merely one aspect of the testing program.
In Yakutia, the Il-114-300 was subjected to temperatures as low as -45°C during winter evaluations in 2026. The aircraft was subjected to a significantly different climate when it traveled to Hyderabad, India, for the Wings India international airshow shortly thereafter.
The contrast enabled engineers to evaluate the performance of the aircraft in a variety of environmental conditions, all the while introducing it to potential international customers.
Sukhar stated that the response from Indian visitors exceeded expectations.
Demonstration flights focused not on aerobatics or performance figures but on passenger comfort.
Conventional turboprop aircraft often suffer from cabin noise and vibration that can discourage travelers accustomed to jetliners. Sukhar is of the opinion that the Il-114-300 has effectively resolved those concerns.
The aircraft was one of the most discussed exhibits at the show due to the significantly quiter cabin and minimum vibration that passengers experienced during the demonstration flights.
During the exhibition, he characterized the aircraft as “super popular,” with visitors demonstrating a greater interest in its passenger experience than in its technical specifications.
Ready for Regional Aviation
The Il-114-300 is more than just another regional aircraft that is entering production.
The aircraft is equipped with a modern digital flight deck, updated avionics, redesigned passenger interiors, and new Russian-built turboprop engines, providing capacity for 66 passengers. Its certification facilitates serial manufacturing and deliveries to airlines that necessitate efficient operations from regional terminals, particularly in challenging environments.
However, Sergey Sukhar believes that the aircraft’s certification is ultimately about people, rather than technology.
Every successful flight results from extensive engineering, numerous test sorties, and pilots willing to take new aircraft into challenging situations.
The privilege of transporting ordinary passengers is only granted to a prototype after it has endured hundreds of rigorous evaluations, Siberian winters, Indian heat, and Arctic expeditions.
The work is far from complete, although certification is a major milestone. The Ilyushin team is currently conducting tests to certify operations from gravel and unpaved runways, enhance short-field performance, and broaden the aircraft’s operating envelope in hot climates and mountainous regions. It is anticipated that these modifications will render the Il-114-300 even more adaptable, enabling it to provide service to remote communities where airport infrastructure is still scarce.
The Il-114-300 is superior to a contemporary regional turboprop in the eyes of Sukhar and the engineers who developed the program. It is a testament to the years of dedication, technical innovation, and rigorous testing that have been dedicated to the restoration of Russia’s regional aviation capabilities with an aircraft that is specifically designed for the country’s distinctive geography. The aircraft is on the brink of a new era, not as a prototype, but as a dependable workhorse that will transport passengers across the vast and frequently difficult topography of Russia, with certification now secured and serial production in progress.
