The woman who was assaulted raped and inserted with an iron rod in her private part on 10th September at midnight, at Khairani Road in the Saki Naka area of Mumbai has succumbed to her injuries. The 34-year-old woman was violated by a 45-year-old inside a tempo parked on the roadside.
The news of the horrifying brutalization of the woman that comes after the inhuman rape and murder of 21-year-old civil defence officer Rabiya Saifi and reminds of the Nirbhaya case where no sense of humanity could be seen.
Earlier, talking to the media about the condition of the victim, Deputy Commissioner of Police of Mumbai zone 10, Dr Maheshwar Reddy said, “Doctors performed the required operation but the victim is still in critical condition.”
On 10th September, around 3:00 AM-3:30 AM, the Mumbai Police control room received a phone call from a person asking for help. The caller informed the police about a quarrel where a man had assaulted a woman with a rod.
“Within 5-10 minutes, SakiNaka Police officials reached the location. The police found an injured lady inside of the pickup tempo. The lady was bleeding profusely and was immediately rushed to Rajawadi Hospital by the police where the doctors immediately tended to her,” DCP, Dr Maheshwar said while talking to media.
The accused, identified as Mohan Chauhan, fled from the crime scene and was tracked down to be in Kurla after the police examined the CCTV footage in the area.
Police arrested the accused on Friday evening and a case has been registered under Section 376 (Punishment for rape), 307 (Attempt to murder) 323 (For voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The Police are going through his background for any prior criminal record. The police also believe that more people may be involved in the crime.
“We have booked the accused under IPC sections 376 (rape) and 307(murder attempt). He will be produced before a magistrate court on Saturday,” said Balwant Deshmukh, senior police inspector of Sakinaka police station.
The case is being further investigated by the police.
