Despite identifying areas where the SJ-100 falls short of the Embraer E190-E2, new production figures show Russian airlines are optimistic, with numerous orders and increased assembly line activity.

The First Production SJ-100 Looks Different from Earlier Expectations

The assessment evaluates the import-substituted SJ-100, as opposed to the original Superjet 100, which was entered into service with various foreign-made systems.

The analysis concentrates on the aircraft that is anticipated to receive its initial certification, rather than measuring long-term design objectives.

The aircraft is expected to accommodate approximately 100 passengers, which is in line with the capacity of competing regional jets, as indicated in the presentation.

Nevertheless, there are several operational characteristics that deviate from early expectations.

The operational range is expected to be approximately 2,115 kilometers, while the commercial payload is estimated to be around 10 tonnes. The fuel consumption is anticipated to reach approximately 1,932 kilograms per hour, and the required take off distance will increase to approximately 1,800 meters.

The report estimates the aircraft’s acquisition cost at around 6.9 billion rubles, reflecting the higher expenses of a nearly fully domestic production following the replacement of imported systems.

The Embraer E190-E2 and the SJ-100: A Comparison

The assessment compares the SJ-100 to the E190-E2, one of the most successful modern regional jets.

Both aircraft operate in the approximately 100-seat market, and their passenger capacity is broadly comparable. Nevertheless, the comparison indicates that the Brazilian aircraft maintains a competitive edge in numerous commercially significant categories.

The Embraer is credited with a commercial cargo of approximately 13 tonnes, while the SJ-100 is credited with a payload of approximately 10 tonnes. Airlines are granted increased operational flexibility and revenue potential on numerous routes as a result of a larger payload.

The performance of the runway also varies. The Embraer necessitates approximately 1,650 meters for launch, while the SJ-100 necessitates somewhere around 1,800 meters. Operational flexibility is reduced, particularly at smaller regional airports, as a result of the necessity for longer runways.

Acquisition cost may be the most striking comparison. The SJ-100 is estimated to be approximately 6.9 billion rubles, which is more than twice as costly in the assessment, while the Embraer E190-E2 is shown at approximately 3 billion rubles.

The evaluation suggests that the operational range and overall performance of the aircraft have been reduced and the fuel consumption and weight have increased, particularly during the initial certification phase.

The program continues to receive support from airlines

The SJ-100 is gaining commercial momentum, despite the conservative performance assessment.

Russian airlines have already placed reservations for 42 SJ-100 aircraft, suggesting that they remain confident in the program as certification approaches, according to Governor Dmitry Demeshin of Khabarovsk Krai.

Additionally, he disclosed that 27 aircraft are undergoing various phases of assembly in Komsomolsk-on-Amur at the same time, underscoring the accelerating production rate at Yakovlev’s manufacturing facility.

These production figures are not merely manufacturing statistics for the regional aviation sector of Russia. They imply that the program is transitioning from prototype testing to sustained serial production.

Demeshin also underscored the increasing significance of the Far East, where regional air transport remains indispensable due to the extensive distances and inadequate ground infrastructure.

Regular aviation services are essential for cities like Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Yakutsk, Magadan, and Okhotsk. Airlines operating these routes need aircraft that can fly frequently, reduce maintenance downtime, and simplify logistics.

A Program Rebuilt Through Import Substitution

The SJ-100 has emerged as one of the most significant initiatives in the civil aviation sector of Russia as a result of the sanctions imposed on the aerospace sector and the departure of foreign suppliers.

Regional airlines are generally cautious when introducing a new aircraft type. Operators desire assurance that production will persist, spare parts will be accessible, and long-term maintenance support will be dependable for the duration of the aircraft’s operational life.

Fleet replacement is the primary factor driving demand

The regional aircraft market in Russia is influenced by the practical necessity to replace aging imported aircraft that operate domestic routes.

The SJ-100 is addressing a paucity of aircraft in the 100-seat category, in contrast to the larger narrow-body segment, where aircraft such as the MC-21 will compete for trunk routes. Under the current market conditions, relatively few alternatives are available to Russian airlines for efficiently servicing domestic destinations. Consequently, they require regional jets.
