The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recommended minimizing the use of hormonal drugs and antibiotics for severe and moderate COVID-19 disease, so as not to catch a fungal infection Mucormycosis  (formerly called zygomycosis), or the Black Fungus Disease or Black Fungal Disease associated with the Mucor mold which is commonly found in nature.

Some of the fungal infections found in COVID-19 patients in India may be associated with yeast and others with fungus. In turn, the fungus can cause infections such as mucormycosis and aspergillosis which is caused by another type of fungus.

As per CDC, the symptoms include one-sided facial swelling, headache, nasal or sinus congestion, black lesions on the nasal bridge or upper inside of the mouth that quickly become more severe, and fever.

This yeast and mold are usually found in the environment, but affect people with weakened immune systems, such as people with diabetes or other chronic diseases, cancer patients, or those who have taken certain medications for a long time, and of course, COVID-19 also weakens the immune system.

WHO recommends minimising the disproportionate use of corticosteroids and antibiotics for mild to moderate cases. She explained that corticosteroids in severe cases do save lives, but their massive use can cause fungal infections.

WHO also recommends that the biomedical equipment, in particular ventilators, be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

When a patient is diagnosed with fungal infections, there is a need to treat with antifungal drugs. It is important to emphasize that the readiness of the medical system and a high standard of hygiene and disinfection is important to bring this risk is under control.

Mucormycosis, or black fungus, is a complication caused by a fungal infection. The disease can develop in those who are in contact with fungal spores in the environment, or after the fungus enters the skin through a cut, scratch, or burn. The disease is most dangerous for patients with diabetes, as well as those whose immunity is reduced after fighting the disease, in particular the Corona virus.
