Russia Masters SaM146 Engine Parts Production, Eyes Full Independence

The repair and maintenance of essential components of the SaM146 aircraft engine for “Superjets” has been effectively replaced by Rostec with domestic manufacturing.

PowerJet, a joint venture between the French firm Snecma and the Russian NPO Saturn, manufactures the saM146 mixed-flow turbofan engine. The gas generator, a component of the high-pressure compressor, chamber combustion, and high-pressure turbines, constitutes the “heated” portion of the engine manufactured by Snecma. In contrast, Saturn produces the fan and low-pressure turbine and performs general assembly. Designed for regional aircraft, the Sukhoi Superjet 100 is presently equipped with this system. After the sanctions in 2022, France has withdrawn from the venture.

Following the imposition of US and Western sanctions against Russia in retaliation for the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, PowerJet terminated its contract in late March 2022 to supply SaM146 components, technical support, engine maintenance, and repair services.

The modular repair of the electronic control unit, one of the most essential components of the Franco-Russian power plant, has been mastered by specialists from the United Engine Corporation (UEC), which is linked with the facility. Domestic gasoline filters have also been designed for the engine, another development.

The electronic engine control unit was one of the most important components and significantly impacted the SaM146’s ability to function adequately. To facilitate the diagnosis of malfunctioning modules and the subsequent replacement of such modules, UEC specialists have created and validated a new kind of repair. During January and February 2024, the first repaired units are anticipated to be put into operation.

The process of importing replacement components for the SaM146 engine has reached another significant stage: creating and certifying an alternate filter design. After the relevant testing was completed, the first batch was shipped to the operators.
