Oscar-winner Emma Stone has signed a deal with Disney to portray the 101 Dalmatians Villain, Cruella De Vil, the sequel to Disney Studios’ “Cruella”.
The announcement of the sequel was made in June, a few weeks after the release of the live-action film on streaming platform Disney Plus and selected theatres in the US.
Cruella, because of the pandemic, was released in theatres and on Disney+ PVOD tier on May 26, earning more than $222 million in worldwide ticket sales. The date of release of the movie Cruella 2 has not been confirmed yet. It is still uncertain that the movie will be a pure theatrical release or will be released like the previous one.
Cruella director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara are both returning for the sequel. “We are proud to work alongside Emma and Disney, and appreciate the studio’s willingness to recognize her contributions as a creative partner.”
“We hope that this will open the door for more members of the creative community to take part in the success of new platforms,” Patrick Whitesell, executive chairperson of Endeavor said about the agency’s client Stone and her ‘Cruella 2,’ deal.
Stone starred in an executive producer “Cruella”, which was the third live-action movie featuring the Disney villain. Veteran actor Glenn Close played the character in the previous two films — “101 Dalmatians” (1996), and “102 Dalmatians” (2000).
Cruella was praised by critics at 74% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, who also cited future awards-season buzz for the pic. The movie also earned an ‘A’ Cinema Score from audiences.
