The most dangerous gap on today’s battlefield is not the gap between an advanced army and a less developed one. It is the gap between an enemy that can change its methods within days and a military system that needs years to define a requirement, approve a budget, choose a supplier, and field a capability. The first buys a commercial drone, straps an explosive charge to it and tests it the next day. The second forms a committee. By the time the answer arrives, the problem has already changed.
In photographs, they sometimes look like a mob of barbarians in flip flops. That is precisely the image that tempts modern armies to dismiss them. They do not need to match an advanced force in every domain. They need only find one weakness, concentrate against it, move quickly, and force the stronger side to pay an absurd price for every response. They do not prevail because their weapons are better. They succeed when the system facing them is too expensive, too slow, and too confident in itself.
When an advanced military tries to impose a technological answer on an enemy with little infrastructure, complexity becomes a liability. It is hard to disrupt a force that barely depends on a network, paralyse a command with no orderly structure, or sever a supply chain built on fuel, ammunition, and loot gathered along the way. Barbarians racing in Toyota pickups, firing RPGs, machine guns, and small arms, offer none of the tidy targets for which modern systems were designed. Their chaos is a weakness, but it can also be a layer of protection.
Even an F-16 armed with sophisticated bombs struggles against mountain guerrillas who hide in caves and cross wadis with donkeys and mules. It can dominate the sky and destroy an exposed target, but the most accurate bomb is useless without reliable coordinates. A fighter who does not transmit, travel in an identifiable convoy or keep a fixed headquarters gives technology little to grasp. Air superiority delivers enormous power, but it cannot hold a cave, a mountain track or a village.
On land, knowledge of terrain is itself a weapon. Guerrillas who herd sheep by day know every rock, cave, water source and hidden trail. A better trained, equipped and disciplined commando may face them, but he is entering that ground for the first time. For the local, terrain is memory. For the outsider, it is a map. That gap lets the weaker force choose its route, ambush site and moment of disappearance.
The 7 October attack demonstrated this with brutal clarity. Israel had an advanced barrier, sensors, cameras, communications, and remotely controlled weapon stations. Hamas terrorists combined rocket barrages with commercial drones that dropped explosives on observation posts, demolition charges, bulldozers, motorcycles, and paragliders. A mix of cheap, simple tools disabled during the opening hours, parts of a system built at enormous cost.
This must be stated clearly. Tactical ingenuity grants no moral legitimacy. 7 October was a terrorist massacre of civilians. That is precisely why it must be studied. The atrocity did not occur because Hamas possessed superior technology. It occurred because Hamas found a simple way around a complex system, struck its eyes and ears, and created a volume of attacks that the forces available in the sector were not ready to stop at once.
The lesson is not that technology failed. The lesson is that technology becomes dangerous when it replaces presence, readiness, and judgement instead of strengthening them. A sensor can warn, but it cannot hold ground. A camera can see, but it cannot charge. A remote weapon station is effective only while power, communications, and command remain intact. A system without human and physical backup can turn from advanced to fragile within minutes.
Saudi Arabia offers another stark example. Despite years of intervention and enormous military spending, it has struggled to neutralise the Houthis or secure the approaches to Bab al Mandab. In September 2026, the Houthis made significant gains along the Red Sea coast and seized territory and islands near the strait. Saudi-backed Yemeni forces collapsed in some sectors and left advanced weaponry behind. A large Houthi build-up went undetected, leaving Riyadh once again reacting to an enemy considered inferior by almost every material measure.
On paper, the imbalance is almost absurd. Saudi Arabia has advanced combat aircraft, expensive air defence and one of the world’s largest defence budgets. The Houthis have Iranian backing, missiles, drones, local production, difficult terrain and patience. They are not primitive. Their advantage is the ability to disperse, hide, absorb losses, replenish cheap stocks and choose when to attack. An advanced aircraft can destroy a target. It cannot repair poor intelligence, unite fragmented allies or hold ground for a land force unwilling to fight.
The Houthis also understand the economics of attrition. A cheap drone or simple missile need not penetrate every time. Its launch alone can activate radar, scramble crews, halt movement and sometimes force the use of a far costlier interceptor. The defender may win each encounter yet gradually lose in inventory, budget and tempo. A high interception rate looks impressive on a briefing screen, but not when its warehouses empty faster than the enemy’s.
Ukraine shows the other side of the same equation. Fighting a much larger Russian army, it has turned commercial and first person view drones into reconnaissance and strike weapons produced in vast numbers. By 2025, Kyiv planned to procure about 4.5 million such drones. They locate targets, strike vehicles and positions, harass supply lines and create areas where even a short movement becomes dangerous.
Ukraine’s battlefield gains do not come from one miraculous drone. It has built a rapid cycle of learning. An operator identifies a problem, a workshop changes a component, software is updated and a new version reaches the front within a short time. Russia adapts and jams; the Ukrainians change frequencies and methods; both sides repeat the process. The advantage does not necessarily belong to the side that designed the perfect product. It belongs to the side that can produce, lose, repair and replace faster.
This is not truly a return from new weapons to old ones. The battlefield is joining them together. Trenches, minefields, camouflage, decoys, artillery and infantry have returned to the centre of combat, but drones hover above them, electronic warfare operates behind them and information moves through advanced software and communications. The simple weapon becomes more lethal because it is connected to digital eyes. New technology becomes more useful when it serves a basic, reliable and affordable method.
The answer is not to discard stealth aircraft, satellites, precision missiles or advanced intelligence. Some missions require them, and abandoning them would be costly. The mistake is using the most expensive answer for every problem and building a military in which almost every capability depends on a complex network, rare component or foreign supply. A strong military must know when it needs exceptional quality and when good enough quantity should flood the field.
The proper measure is not the price of the platform, but the price of the result. Using an expensive missile against a cheap threat may be justified when lives or strategic infrastructure are at risk. It cannot be routine. Sustainable defence requires layers: simple detection, electronic jamming, guns, interceptor drones, deception and costly interceptors as a last resort. The same logic applies to attack. A position does not need expensive precision ammunition if a shell, mortar round or expendable drone can achieve the same result.
Stocks must return to the centre of planning. Militaries long took pride in small numbers of exquisite systems and assumed war would be short. Ukraine, Israel, the Red Sea and Yemen show that war can continue, spread and consume ammunition faster than peacetime procurement can supply it. A system that cannot be built in volume, repaired near the front and replaced quickly is both an asset and a dependency.
The human element matters even more. A cheap and agile enemy exploits fixed procedures, long chains of command and the assumption that the past will repeat itself. The answer requires junior commanders who are allowed to improvise, reservists who arrive ready, local forces that know the terrain and intelligence that will listen even to a signal that does not fit the accepted picture. No algorithm compensates for arrogance, and no camera repairs an organisational culture that keeps explaining why the enemy will not dare.
For India, the lesson is especially sharp. It must defend long land borders, mountain regions, coasts, islands, sea lanes and critical infrastructure. It confronts regular armies, terrorism, proxies, infiltrations and drones, often at the same time. India needs combat aircraft, BrahMos missiles, satellites and advanced defence systems. It equally needs simple tools in large quantities, units that can operate when the network fails and an industrial base that can expand production in weeks rather than years.
India has an advantage many countries lack: a broad engineering base, software expertise, electronics and automotive production, drone start-ups and a vast domestic market. Indigenous production and defence innovation point in the right direction. The test is whether procurement can accept an imperfect product, buy it in volume, put it in soldiers’ hands, gather feedback and improve it repeatedly. A system that provides 80 per cent of the capability, is available in ten thousand units and can be repaired in India may be more valuable than a perfect system delivered by the dozen.
Every Indian formation should have organic low cost aerial reconnaissance, electronic warfare and counter drone defence. Bases, ports and energy facilities need layered protection that does not rely only on expensive missiles. Units must train to fight with lost communications, disrupted navigation and damaged headquarters. Deception, camouflage, dispersion and manual backup deserve the same seriousness as sensors and artificial intelligence. They determine whether a force keeps fighting after the first blow.
The return to simple, inexpensive weapons is not a retreat into the past. It corrects an illusion. War is not automatically won by the most impressive system. It is a contest of tempo, stocks, recovery and learning. The barbarians in flip flops need not shoot down every aircraft or destroy every tank. They need only force the advanced military to answer each small threat at a price it cannot sustain.
The future army will know what must be expensive and what must remain cheap, simple and plentiful. India can lead this balance. A military parade shows what a country bought. A long war shows what it can replace by morning.
