Russia has placed a state-backed order for 72 new Mi-8MTV-1 helicopters, which will be delivered during 2026 and 2027, and has initiated a new production program for one of its most successful civilian helicopters. The Kazan Helicopter Plant, sole producer of the Mi-8MTV-1 variant in the country, will manufacture the aircraft under the Russian Helicopters holding company.
The Kazan plant previously produced 86 Mi-8MTV-1 helicopters for Russian commercial operators as part of a state-supported procurement program. The new contract is the continuation of this program. The latest order aims to modernize the civil helicopter fleet, focusing on companies in remote regions where helicopters are vital for transportation. Helicopters are crucial for connecting isolated communities, supporting industries, and responding to emergencies across Russia’s vast Arctic, Siberian, and Far Eastern territories, spanning eleven time zones.
Government Financing Supports Domestic Production
The procurement is supported by a government financing initiative that is designed to improve the domestic aerospace industry in Russia and assist commercial operators in the renewal of their fleets with locally manufactured aircraft.
The program uses state funding mechanisms to finance the delivery of the 72 helicopters, which amounts to over 24 billion rubles. The procurement model that has been effectively used for previous deliveries will be maintained, as the aircraft will be supplied to Russian civil operators throughout 2026 and 2027.
The government continues to provide support for helicopter production as a critical component of regional transportation infrastructure, in addition to investments in passenger aircraft such as the SJ-100, MC-21, and Il-114-300.
Kazan Continues as the Exclusive Manufacturer
The Mi-8MTV-1 is a civilian variant of the legendary Mi-8 helicopter family, which is widely considered the most successful twin-engine transport helicopter in the world. It is one of the most advanced versions.
The Mi-8 family is manufactured by two Russian facilities, each of which specializes in a distinct variant. The Mi-8MTV-1 is exclusively produced by the Kazan Helicopter Plant, while the Mi-171, also known as the Mi-8AMT, is manufactured by the Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant. Each plant has acquired expertise in its own production line, even though the helicopters are members of the same family.
Kazan manufactured approximately 40 civilian Mi-8MTV-1 helicopters in 2025, with the exception of military versions that were produced for Russia’s armed forces. Consequently, the new order represents nearly two years of civilian production at the current manufacturing rate, ensuring a consistent workload for the facility and its extensive supplier network.
Plans for Deliveries Through 2027
Russian Helicopters has verified that all 72 helicopters will be completed and delivered between 2026 and 2027. Suppliers, manufacturers, and operators will be able to efficiently coordinate deliveries while maintaining constant production at the assembly line, as production will be distributed across both years.
The manufacturing program supports not only the Kazan Helicopter Plant but also numerous Russian companies supplying engines, avionics, transmission systems, rotor components and other critical equipment. Therefore, the project contributes to the maintenance of industrial capacity and employment in the aerospace supply chain of Russia.
Designed for Russia’s Harshest Operating Conditions
One of the Mi-8MTV-1’s most significant assets is its capacity to operate consistently in some of the most challenging environments on Earth.
The helicopter is well-suited for missions in the Arctic, Siberia, the Far East, and mountainous regions, where severe weather often restricts alternative modes of transportation. It is certified to operate in temperatures ranging from minus 50 degrees Celsius to plus 50 degrees Celsius.
It is capable of operating from unprepared landing sites, snow-covered topography, remote oil and gas installations, and isolated settlements that lack permanent aviation infrastructure due to its rugged design. This adaptability has rendered the Mi-8 family essential for both commercial operators and government agencies.
Passenger transportation, cargo delivery, emergency medical evacuation, search-and-rescue operations, disaster relief missions, and logistical support for energy companies are all routinely executed by the aircraft. In numerous regions of Russia, helicopters continue to be the sole reliable year-round method of transporting essential products, medical supplies, and individuals.
Proven Payload and Performance
The Mi-8MTV-1 is well-suited for a wide variety of civilian missions due to its remarkable carrying capacity and versatility.
The helicopter has the capacity to transport up to 23 passengers in a standard passenger configuration or transport up to four tonnes of cargo. It continues to be one of the most capable helicopters in the medium transport category, with a maximum takeoff weight of 13 tonnes.
Its maximum speed is approximately 250 kilometers per hour, and its typical cruising speed is approximately 230 kilometers per hour. This enables operators to efficiently traverse the extensive geography of Russia, covering long distances.
The helicopter’s standard flight range is approximately 500 kilometers, with a maximum range of up to 800 kilometers, contingent upon the payload and operating conditions.
Additional fuel containers, each with a capacity of 915 liters, may be installed by operators for extended missions. The helicopter’s operational range is increased by these auxiliary tanks to 1,050 to 1,300 kilometers, allowing for flights to remote destinations without the need for intermediate refueling pauses. This capability is especially advantageous for Arctic operations and offshore energy initiatives, where refueling facilities may be unavailable.
The Civil Helicopter Fleet of Russia’s Backbone
The Mi-8MTV-1 is one of the most significant aircraft in Russia’s civilian aviation sector, although the Mi-8 family is perhaps most well-known internationally for its military service.
The helicopter has become the preferred choice for regional airlines, emergency services, government agencies, and industrial operators due to its proven reliability, straightforward maintenance, extensive support infrastructure, and capacity to execute a diverse range of missions.
Operators have also benefited from a mature logistics network and readily accessible technical expertise as a result of decades of continuous production. While maintaining high fleet availability in challenging environments, this model significantly reduces operational costs.
Supporting Domestic Aviation Growth
The contract ensures the Kazan Helicopter Plant’s continued production until 2027, while simultaneously providing employment opportunities for thousands of competent individuals in Russia’s aerospace sector. For operators, it provides access to a modern, proven and versatile helicopter capable of serving the country’s most remote regions.
The Mi-8MTV-1 continues to serve as a cornerstone of Russia’s civil aviation fleet, as the country continues to invest in domestic aerospace manufacturing. The helicopter is expected to continue to serve as a critical workhorse, providing critical services, supporting strategic industries, and connecting remote communities in one of the world’s largest and most geographically demanding nations due to its capacity to operate in extreme climates, carry substantial payloads, and execute a diverse array of missions.
