The Airbus A220-100 and Russia’s new SJ-100 are both relatively small narrow-body jets that are intended to operate routes where larger aircraft may be uneconomical and connect regional cities. They belong to a similar segment of the commercial aviation market. Nevertheless, the two aircraft exhibit significantly distinct design priorities on paper.
The A220-100 is superior in many conventional performance categories, including maximum passenger capacity and range. However, such a comparison only provides a partial account. The SJ-100 is being developed in an aviation environment where technological sovereignty, domestic maintenance and freedom from foreign supply chains have become almost as important as fuel efficiency or range.
Two Aircraft With Significantly Differing Origins
The Airbus A220 began life as Bombardier’s clean-sheet CSeries programme. Subsequently, Airbus assumed responsibility for the program and transformed the aircraft into a critical component of its commercial portfolio.
The SJ-100 has a different history. Rather than being an entirely new aircraft, it represents a profound redevelopment of the Sukhoi Superjet platform. Russia has replaced lots of foreign systems, with the most major change being the substitution of the Franco-Russian PowerJet SaM146 engine with the domestically developed PD-8.
That difference is fundamental. Airbus could optimize the A220 based on conventional global-market considerations, whereas the SJ-100 program became increasingly focused on the reconstruction of a largely Russian industrial and technological supply chain.
Airbus Has a Major Range Advantage
The clearest difference appears in range.
The SJ-100 is currently listed by Yakovlev with a maximum flight range of 3,530 km. The aircraft is capable of accommodating a maximum of 103 passengers and has a maximum take-off weight of 49,450 kg. It is powered by two PD-8 turbofans and necessitates approximately 1,900 meters of runway for takeoff, as per the manufacturer.
Airbus lists considerably more impressive figures for the A220-100. It has a maximum take-off weight of 63.7 tonnes and a current published range of up to 6,700 km. Airbus typically provides a two-class capacity of 100–120 passengers, with a maximum seating capacity of 135.
The range difference enables the A220-100 to perform missions that are significantly more extensive than those for which the SJ-100 is predominantly designed.
This does not necessarily suggest that the SJ-100 is unsuitable for its domestic function. Multiple Russian regional sectors are conveniently accommodated within its range. However, the A220 provides airlines with a significantly greater degree of adaptability: the same aircraft can operate relatively short regional flights and substantially longer thin routes.
Capacity Also Favours the A220
The capacity difference is less dramatic but still significant.
The SJ-100 is classified as an approximately 100-seat aircraft, with a maximum capacity of 103 passengers. In its highest-density configuration, the A220-100 can accommodate up to 135 passengers.
That additional capacity has the potential to provide airlines with greater flexibility in configuring the aircraft for various markets. The A220 is capable of transporting a significantly greater number of passengers on routes with a higher demand, without the need to transition to the larger A220-300 or A320neo categories.
Nevertheless, both aircraft provide an appealing five-abreast cabin configuration. The A220 employs a 3+2 seating configuration, while the SJ-100 employs a 2+3 seating configuration. This eliminates the contentious situation that is present in conventional six-abreast narrow-bodies, which have two middle seats in each row.
Airbus has also prioritized the A220’s spacious cabin architecture, large overhead bins, and broad seats.
The Economic Comparison Is More Complicated
Airbus markets the A220 as a cutting-edge, energy-efficient aircraft of the future. The Pratt & Whitney PW1500G geared turbofans and composite-intensive wings were specifically engineered to meet the demands of contemporary commercial aviation.
The real-world economics of the SJ-100 are more difficult to evaluate due to the fact that the PD-8-powered aircraft has not yet amassed the same amount of commercial operating data as the A220.
That makes definitive claims about fuel burn, maintenance costs and engine durability premature.
Another critical qualification is that the A220’s advanced propulsion technology has introduced its own operational complications. Pratt & Whitney has spent numerous years addressing the durability, maintenance, and manufacturing-related issues that have impacted its geared-turbofan family. Pratt stated in July 2026 that disruption was subsiding and that groundings of smaller aircraft, such as the A220, had nearly disappeared. Airbus has acknowledged its frustration with engine availability.
The A220’s established performance and global experience have exposed issues that the newer PD-8 has not yet faced in large-scale airline service.
PD-8 Changes the SJ-100 Programme
In June 2026, the PD-8 received its type certificate from the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency after successfully completing the certification test program. This was one of the most significant developments for the Russian aircraft.
The engine has subsequently started serial production, with the initial production engine units being assembled for delivery to United Aircraft Corporation. The manufacturing program has necessitated the implementation of approximately 100 new machines and production systems at UEC-Saturn, as well as extensive modernization.
Consequently, the focus transitions from establishing that Russia has the capability to develop the engine to demonstrating its ability to manufacture it with reliability and provide economic support for thousands of commercial flight cycles.
The scheduled delivery of the entirely import-substituted SJ-100 is expected to happen in the first quarter of 2027 or by the end of 2026, although the program’s schedule has been subject to numerous modifications.
Technological Independence Is the SJ-100’s Real Advantage
If the SJ-100 and A220-100 are compared solely on the basis of their established commercial performance, range, and capacity, Airbus is the clear winner.
However, the primary objective of Russia’s development of the SJ-100 is no longer to outcompete Airbus in international airline competitions.
Its strategic purpose is increasingly different.
The vulnerability that is produced when Russian-operated aircraft rely heavily on foreign engines, avionics, components, software, and maintenance networks was demonstrated by Western sanctions. The objective of the redesigned SJ-100 is to develop an aircraft that Russian airlines can operate without relying on Western manufacturers for critical systems.
The A220’s extensive international support network is advantageous for airlines operating in Europe, Asia, or North America. Access to that ecosystem is no longer a given for Russian carriers that are operating under sanctions.
A domestically supportable aircraft with a slightly lower range may be more valuable than a theoretically superior foreign aircraft that lacks reliable access to spare parts and manufacturer support.
The Real Test Begins With Airline Service
In several headline specifications, the A220-100 is without a doubt the stronger aircraft. It is a member of a mature global program with considerable operational experience, can accommodate a greater number of passengers, and flies a greater distance.
Nevertheless, the SJ-100 is designed to meet a distinct strategic need.
Its success will ultimately be contingent upon the Russian industry’s ability to manufacture SJ-100s and PD-8 engines in sufficient quantities, achieve high dispatch reliability, provide affordable spare parts, and establish predictable maintenance intervals, rather than whether it can surpass the A220’s 6,700-km range.
In this regard, the SJ-100’s most significant competitor may not be Airbus at all. It is against the logistical, industrial and reliability problems that affected the earlier Superjet programme.
The SJ-100 could fulfill its primary mission while remaining behind the A220-100 in several specifications if Russia can resolve those issues and establish stable production of the PD-8-powered aircraft. This would provide Russia with a modern regional jet whose continued operation is not contingent upon access to Western aerospace supply chains.
