The AL-41ST-25 industrial gas turbine is emerging as a potential platform for electricity generation at up to 45 megawatts, as Russia is seeking to broaden the scope of its advanced aviation engine technology beyond military aircraft. The project is a component of a more extensive initiative by Rostec’s United Engine Corporation (UEC) to replace imported gas-turbine equipment in Russia’s energy sector with domestically developed alternatives.

The proposed expansion is based on an industrial engine that has already entered pilot-industrial operation at a Gazprom compressor station in Tatarstan and is capable of generating 25 MW. UEC is currently engaged in the development of the platform’s capabilities, which includes the enhancement of gas-dynamic performance and the refinement of its air and oil supply systems.

From Fighter Engine Technology to Industrial Power

The AL-41ST-25 serves as an example of Russia’s efforts to transfer its expertise in aircraft propulsion to industrial applications. The engine was developed by the A. Lyulka Design Bureau, a division of UEC-UMPO in Ufa, as part of an industrial program that was associated with Gazprom and Rostec.

While the AL-41ST-25 is named after the AL-41 engine family, it is an industrial gas-turbine engine that is specifically designed for stationary applications, with a particular emphasis on the operation of compressors using in natural gas transportation. It is important to distinguish this from a fully assembled aircraft engine that is directly mounted in a power station. Rather, it adjusts aviation-derived engineering and gas-generator technology to meet the requirements of continuous industrial operation.

According to UEC, the platform integrates modern electronic engine controls, compact dimensions, and a relatively low weight to achieve high efficiency. In installations where equipment must operate reliably for extended periods while maintaining control over fuel consumption, maintenance requirements, and emissions, these characteristics are crucial.

From 25 MW to a Proposed 45 MW

The AL-41ST-25, which was initially intended for industrial use, was intended to generate 25 MW. Two prototype engines have been produced by UEC-UMPO and are currently in pilot-industrial operation as part of a gas-pumping unit at the Arskaya compressor station in Tatarstan.

Factory testing of the initial prototype commenced in December 2023. In September 2024, Gazprom announced that the engine had successfully completed a 72-hour operational test at the compressor station, with the results confirming reliable operation within the specified parameters. Subsequently, the second prototype underwent its own testing program, which yielded additional data for future development.

The next phase involves the extraction of additional performance from the underlying technology. UEC has previously identified opportunities to develop engines with a power output of 32 MW and 42 MW that are based on the AL-41ST-25 architecture. Although the recently announced target should not be construed as evidence that a production-ready 45 MW unit has already been completed or certified, the new proposal for a 45 MW installation would further expand that ambition.

Efficiency Above 39% Is a Major Selling Point

The engine’s thermal efficacy is one of the primary benefits that UEC emphasizes. According to Andrey Vorobyov, CEO of UEC-Engineering, the AL-41ST-25 is among the highly efficient engines in its power class, with an efficiency that surpasses 39%.

Gas turbines consume huge quantities of fuel during continuous operation, which is why higher efficiency is crucial. A turbine becomes more appealing for industrial power generation when fuel costs are reduced over thousands of operating hours, even with a relatively minor increase in efficiency.

The engine’s development is also focused on the preservation of performance in challenging environmental conditions. In February 2026, Rostec disclosed that the AL-41ST-25 had been granted a declaration of conformity with the requirements of the Eurasian Economic Union. The company emphasized its capacity to sustain efficient operation at elevated ambient temperatures, a critical factor for installations that are subject to seasonal temperature fluctuations.

The reported efficiency figure is a critical technical indicator; however, the complete power-generation system’s efficiency, fuel consumption under actual operating conditions, maintenance costs, and the configuration of a 45 MW generating installation will also influence the final economics.

Two Prototypes Support the Development Programme

The experience acquired from the manufacturing and testing of the existing industrial engines at UEC-UMPO in Ufa is used in the development of the higher-output version. Engineers have had the opportunity to evaluate the operating performance of the two prototypes and pinpoint areas that require improvement.

Engineers have been able to improve the gas dynamics of the engine’s flow path and refine its air and oil supply systems as a result of the testing, as stated in the project announcement. The significance of these modifications is that the performance of a gas turbine is contingent upon the coordinated operation of the compressor, combustion chamber, and turbine, as well as the implementation of effective lubrication and cooling systems.

The engine’s operating characteristics can be optimized by engineers through enhancements to internal gas dynamics and airflow. Nevertheless, the rated power is increased by 80% when the output is increased from 25 MW to 45 MW. To achieve this, the entire configuration must be optimized to satisfy its performance, durability, and reliability objectives, rather than relying solely on incremental modifications.

The project announcement does not indicate that the 45 MW version has already entered serial production or completed certification. As UEC advances the program, the distinction between a commercially available product and a development target remains crucial.

Replacing Imported Equipment in Russia’s Energy Sector

The engine development that has been proposed has implications that extend beyond the engineering program. Gas turbines drive compressors in the natural-gas transportation network and generate electricity in Russia’s industrial energy infrastructure. The reliance on foreign manufacturers for equipment, technical support, and maintenance can be mitigated through the implementation of domestic alternatives.

The AL-41ST family is being positioned by UEC-Engineering as a platform for industrial applications in the oil, gas, and chemical sectors. The company’s approach is to apply a shared technological foundation to the development of equipment across multiple power classes, thereby enabling manufacturers and customers to capitalize on shared engineering expertise.

The 45 MW proposal is also consistent with Russia’s broader industrial import-substitution objectives. Vorobyov stated that the organization intends to provide the sector with next-generation gas turbine equipment that is entirely domestic. This will be accomplished through a national initiative that will replace imported turbines at power generation facilities.

The resilience of the supply chain could be enhanced for industrial customers by the availability of turbines that are domestically supported. However, the technology’s ability to compete effectively will be determined by more than just the manufacturing of the hardware: long-term reliability, spare-parts availability, operating costs, and the ability to deliver equipment at scale.
